About

help21Chernobyl Children’s Project New Mexico began in 2007 to serve children aged 7-17, who are the first born of the survivors of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

Because of radiation contamination in food and soil, many children in Belarus suffer a range of afflictions, including a 1200% increase in cases of thyroid cancer, very low immune systems and birth defects. Many remain undiagnosed due to lack of medical facilities.
The goalĀ  was to help enrich the lives of these children, renew their health, and to educate the community locally and worldwide about this tragic ongoing health situation, which could last hundreds of years or more.

We began as a non-profit organization in 2007, with the hopes of raising funds and bringing groups of children from affected areas to our location in Albuquerque, New Mexico USA, for a two month summer respite each year. We had full medical and dental facilities planned, along with a rich summer program including a tennis camp and arts and English school.

640_chernobyl_children_031Due to recent events and the as yet unresolved discord between the Belarusian government and various host programs in countries around the globe where children used to come for summer respite, we have discontinued this phase of our endeavors. However, this blog began in March 2009, to accomplish our second task, which has now become our primary task - to educate about this ongoing health problem, along with the inherent factual dangers from nuclear meltdown and the risks of using nuclear energy.

We will continue researching and bringing the latest news feedss, articles, and findings from scientists, governmental agencies and experts from around the globe, with the goal of bringing awareness about this accident and potential future catastrophies. We hope you will use this blog frequently to dialogue, check for news postings, include your own by commenting, and include it in your social networking links, to get the word out and help muster up aid to these children in Belarus and Ukraine, who never asked for any of the physical and emotional baggage they now carry. They were simply born to their parents who were there when it happened.

Giving:

If you would like to donate, there are many fine organizations who, although they do not participate in overseas respite programs, provide a more “hands on” direct aid of food, supplies, medical teams and more locally in Belarus, Ukraine, and parts of Russia.

You can locate some of these groupsĀ  through this link on Google and then search some more to find your exact match.
